I know of numerous people who do not play Chess (and Othello which has a similar rating structure) any more because they are rusty and do not want their rating to fall. A couple of friends and I returned to active Chess play in the last couple of years and all of us suffered ratings drops as one would expect. It is very frustrating. Of course, if a player can't defend his or her rating in a tournament, it isn't meaningful any more. I would hope this wouldn't happen in Backgammon where the ratings are secondary to other rewards.
