What is Happening to Backgammon?

I played international checkers which also have ratings - a national (Dutch) one and an international one. I never cared about my rating, never will, and think it strange that people think it matters. What matters is winning tournaments, qualifying for national and international championship, and maybe earning a title. I found ratings fairly meaningless because they assume all matches are of equal importance.
