Example - after your skill peaks, you don't want to play and have your rating go down
Only if there is rating method that gives you negative points for match losses. I find those kind of ratings stupid and demotivating (sp?).
If there is rating that gives you points for wins and nothing for losses, then your decision to stop playing would hurt you - you would have constant X number of points, while all other players would collect new points and come ahead of you.
I have heard lots of stories of people quitting backgammon. However, not one of them has been because of ratings or any other kind of statistic

I like the ACBL (bridge) system that gives you points for wins and for participating...that rewards people for coming and also for doing well.

I never cared about my rating, never will, and think it strange that people think it matters. What matters is winning tournaments, qualifying for national and international championship, and maybe earning a title.

Holding content hostage is not a good strategy to win subscribers

I don't really see the point in pining away for the glory days of the 70s. I'm sure they were quite wonderful, but the accumulated experience of several decades has shown us that the 70s are not coming back for any number of reasons, so I can't see the attraction of leaving the rules and practices of the 70s undisturbed in hopes those days will spontaneously return.
