What is Happening to Backgammon?

I accept that, although I think it is pretty weird. The reason why people might prize a rating achievement to that extent, though, is most likely that they worked really hard to get the rating in the first place. That wouldn't have happened in the absence of a rating system and they might not have been motivated to play at all if they hadn't had that arbitrary number to shoot for.
My playing strength at chess is probably 400 points below my last published rating, but the reason I wouldn't play again has nothing to do with losing rating points; even if you promised me I would never be penalized a single point for losing, it still wouldn't be enjoyable to suck at chess and lose to people that I would have beaten back in the day. Maybe it's because I am no longer on the dating scene that I don't appreciate the benefits which accrue from being able to drop one's chess rating into casual conversation...
