Deep backgame - a philosophical question.

That is the pudels core.

I had to fumble around the interwebs to find out what you meant by this. Apparently, in Goethe's Faust, a large, black dog that has followed Faust home reveals himself to be Mephistopheles, prompting Faust to exclaim "Das also war des Pudels Kern!" -- "So that was the poodle's core!". I suppose the more meaningful and more or less equivalent phrase in English, at least to those of us who don't know a Pudels Kern from a Gretchenfrage, would be "the heart of the matter," or "the gist of the matter," although those phrases in no way evoke the Faustian image of a devilish heart at the core of a large, black curly-haired canine.
