Let's not get carried away with the popularity of backgammon in Denmark. Right now there are only 718 paying members of DBGF. 5 years ago there were more than 1000 members. IMO, that's not a lot in a country with 5 million inhabitants.
DBGF has got no sponsor at the moment. In previous years Games Grid and TMG has been sponsoring DBGF. Carlsberg has previously been sponsoring a big national tournament.
Local recruitment and retention of members in the clubs is key. Having a national organisation that can run national and regional championships will help the retention of the members. Having a national team league is also key for the retention of members.
There is no magic required. Having a few very committed players in the local clubs who drive things and a nice environment where newcomers are welcome is all it takes. When members bring friends to the club then the club will grow if the new members feel welcome and enjoy their time in the club. Simple as that.
However, in praxis few can be bothered to drive the local club and usually there are so many weirdos in the club that many newcomers are not really enjoying themselves enough to wanna come back.
