Also, don't be carried away with the Mediterranean popularity of backgammon. My country Bulgaria happens to be Mediterranean (it is +18C in Sofia today); West European - now a member of EU, East European in the last 65 years. When an earthquake strikes around Bulgarians joke it does not hit us, because God has obsolete maps of Bulgaria (bordering on three seas), but eventualy the strike will come - the 61 from the bar. Let it be known that Mediterranean countries are no exception. The Quran and the Prophet forbid not only playing backgammon, but watching it too. Crusader soldiers were forbidden to play backgammon, but later rules relaxed and higher ranks were permitted up to a relevant level. Today we are being constantly exposed to the CONVENTIONAL wisdom that 1. Backgammon is gambling. 2. ONLINE gambling is bad, but REAL CASINO is a proper business. 3. State lotteries help solving problems.
Make a parallel with drugs vs. tobacco and alchohol.
I guess we need to do more to promote backgammon as a game of thought rather than a game of gambling. I think Denmark served a good lesson.
