Two additional comments you made that are worth reinforcing, I think:
(1) Going over, thinking over the table gives you an understanding of why the numbers are what they are (which helps make them memorable). It doesn't just (as I think I implied) give you an appreciation for the arithmetical patterns in the table (which also helps make them memorable).
(2) The more you do something the easier it becomes. Mental arithmetic can seem tough to straighten out for those of us who aren't accustomed to it.
Yup. I found the doubling window in this problem, but it sure seemed like I used to be able to do it in 1/10th the time. Out of practice ;- Suppose you gave yourself a daily task of (1) writing out a 5 point table from memory (looking up, again-again, any entries you didn't remember) and (2) figuring out the doubling windows for two or three scores. How long would it take to become comfortably proficient at doing over the board calculations? Not long, I think. A bonus is that if you do enough of these calculations, you can stop doing a lot of them, because they (along with the raw table data) sink into memory, eventually.
