Ethics vs. Etiquette? in LA

So if someone is pondering taking a cube (and he could be doing that even before it has actually been offered) it is acceptable to interrupt his thought process with facts about the game? Doesn't sound right.
In the example I gave, the player doing the talking was doing so prior to giving the cube (i.e. on his own think time), not after having offered it.
That said, it is my opinion that while an opponent has the right to quiet during his think time, I see nothing wrong with talking in moderation, as long as it appears received in good spirits and is not overdone. Friendly banter during a match keeps it fun for the players and the spectators. Poker players are always exchanging chit chat and engaging in psychological jockeying and it is one of the things that makes it fun to watch. If two backgammon players are ok with that then there is no harm, and I believe we should not take the general attitude of "you should never talk to your opponent other than to point out an irregularity". Backgammon is at its roots a social game. However, if an opponent makes it clear explicitly or implicitly that they are not really interested in chit chat, then the player should respect that and not be annoying.
