In Response To: Why I Hate the Meyer Dice Tube (Chiva Tafazzoli)

Thank you Chiva, for using and advocating this policy of tube use being only by mutual agreement. I don't care if other people want to use a tube, but I certainly don't want to do so unless there is a specific reason such as ones I noted in another post here on this subject...reasons that seldom apply in general play, and are even rarer at major tournaments.

And thank you Bob Glass for articulating the reasons why so many of us have developed a visceral hatred for those things. I didn't know the story about the pseudo-craps-games played with cards in California, and I don't even play craps, but I definitely understand what you are talking about. And so would a lady I met at the Columbus airport while waiting for the plane to Las Vegas last month. She told me she no longer plays the slot machines, because you no longer actually pull the handle and you no longer get to see and hear the coins clattering into the tray when you win. She gets no kick whatever from feeding the new contraptions money, then pushing a button and getting a ticket when she wins. It has all the aesthetic appeal of using the self-checkout machine at the Kroger.

There is no clock policy that will keep me away from a tournament I otherwise want to attend, nor will a dress code deter me from going somewhere. But if the tube becomes standard equipment to some directors, meaning that if my opponent wants to use one and I don't we have to roll for it rather than default to the standard equipment of dice cups and dice, that just might keep me home if I were on the fence about going to that particular event. My view is that the tube should be permissible* by mutual agreement, and ditto for baffle boxes, but never be considered standard equipment.

That said, I still stand by my earlier post that the tube is a reasonable accommodation to players with specific disabilities. I'm willing to give directors some leeway in requiring that opponents of players for whom the use of dice and cups is a serious physical challenge, to use the tube just for those matches. They won't have to force me, or probably anyone else here, no matter how much we despise the tube, to use one in that circumstance. But for the rest of y'all...shake 'em up and let the dice and the good times roll!

Mary Hickey

*I am assuming the tube passes rigorous tests for randomness that no doubt will eventually be conducted by someone--and that is my guess, that it will, or if not that the design can be tweaked to the point where it does.
