You'll need to find another phrase for peeling the onion than "squaring the circle". Come to think of it, "peeling the onion" is available.
Squaring the circle is a well known problem in geometry which most certainly has nothing to do with onions or the method of stepwise refinement: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squaring_the_circle .
Essentially it comes down to the problem of constructing a line of length "SQRT(pi)" with only straightedge and compass, given a line of length 1. As a transcendental number, it can't be done.
