squaring the circle

Of course it is a metaphor. A metaphor is never eaxct and depends on at least two sides - the utterer and the listener; and on the context. If I say "motherfucker" I may get killed somewhere and I may get hugged elsewhere. It is BOTH for the impossibility to solve and the USEFULNESS and joy of thinking. Even if they do not reach the goal, in the process new methods evolve, and side products appear, and the thinker becomes a better thinker, and many times the "impossible" turns into possible.
Kye's tables or Neil's numbers help. Most of the time one needs to know how many cups fill a bucket, not how many spoonfuls. We do learn tables as the multiplication table. But there is a difference between learning (My one year granddaughter was looking at me reproachingly: Granddaddy you don't know the correct button to start the video:) and research.
About old books. Not only the "correct" books deserve attention. Else humanity may forget it's false steps, but it can also forget the construction methosds of pyramids.
