Squaring the ironed circle

and you are telling me my shirt is not ironed.
I do like that metaphor. And thank you for reminding us of Sebastian's original inquiry:
"Does anyone have some advice in how remember the take points and value of gammons easier."Sebastian, I think what you're looking for is to better understand the concept of "gammon price" and either remember, calculate and apply take points and gammon prices at various match scores and cube values or, alternatively, thoroughly absorb the concepts of gammonless take points and gammonless win percentages, and develop your understanding of how and why take points and doubling windows change with the score in match play.
Some players are very adept with over the board mathematics and some are quite willing to memorize and use numeric tables. Some aren't, some never will be, and (as Phil Simborg points out in an article linked to below), basic principles and approximations to full understanding of match play can take all of us very far. What knowledge and which approach is most helpful to you at this stage of your progress depends on you.
I'd point you, first, to this brief review of "gammon rate" and "gammon price," and then suggest you browse the abstracts of 85 articles on When and How to Use the Doubling Cube at Backgammon Galore, particularly those in the sections entitled Introduction, Cube Theory, and Match Play. Something there, I'm sure, is exactly what you're looking for.
