the solution of backgammon

Thanks for the URL pointer, Klaus.
It's worth noting that those who claim backgammon is 'solved' aren't limited to the poor players. Robertie has said such more than once. In fact, he said this based upon Snowie's play (don't know which version). Of course he didn't say this in the mathematically strict sense, but rather meaning "the effort for improvement will produce minimal returns." Maybe that was partly an internal argument which allowed him to move on to poker.
What I see (constantly) speculated upon is the reason for backgammon's downturn in popularity. Ignoring for the moment Chiva's (reasonable) contention that worldwide the game hasn't lost its popularity, what we have is multi-variable issue where people choose their favorite variable(s) and blame that(those). Might as well build a Tower of Babel. Much better yet, forget looking for a reason and do something to affect a solution.
