I saw a segment on this last night on the national news. I didn't even think about BG.

What are the units for the vertical axis? Is this effectively measuring per-capita interest?

Presumably this is from English language publications only. There might be a bias in the last plot due to BG's popularity in parts of the world where English isn't the native language.

Did poker peak in the 40's because men were isolated/grouped during WWII?

One other observation -- it looks like the peaks for BG are delayed a bit from the accepted timeframes. I wonder if this is a systematic bias -- i.e. books actually lag the activity.
