How do we interpret these?

AFAIK there was a ~30 year desert wasteland of backgammon books published between Richard (1940) and Hopper (1941) until Obolensky & James (1969) and Jacoby & Crawford (1970). Yet the plot for mention of the doubling cube shows a big increase during this time period.
Are you sure it's backgammon's doubling cube that is giving these hits?
Also, is it possible to focus in on a time period and actually see the titles of the books giving the hits? Although I suspect some kind of spurious inputs, the datapoints in the 1920's are intriguing.
