...The idea of having everyone show up and playing a 5 point match where half of the players are eliminated after 50 minutes of play seems wrong.

Frank's proposal isn't a single elimination event. Your ideas sound good, too.

In the WSOP, 6000 entrants play down to a final table of 9. How often does that nine contain people without a clue? How many of the nine are among the top 5% of tournament players, skill-wise? In BG, occasionally low-Open players win, but those are only 32-, 64-, or 128-brackets.

Would BG gain in popularity if intermediates had a chance to win open events?
