There is a big advantage doing the gut-check first, followed by the calculation. (I think your Tardieu story illustrates this.) A good player, >95% of the time, should be able to judge: close decision or not? If an error is made in the calculation which disagrees with 'feel', a flag flies up and the calculation can be redone (clock time permitting).

I suspect John does what you say and just doesn't mention the gut-feel part of it.
