Not that I really cared who won the game last night between Tennessee and North Carolina; however, what a cluster**** by UNC and the officials at the end of the game. I hate to see a team rewarded when they make such a stupid move.

20-17 Tennessee. UNC has 1st and 10 on about the Tennessee 22 yard line with 13 seconds to go, no time outs. They run the ball reaching the 17 yard line or so. They've obviously not decided beforehand if they're going to hurry up, line up, and spike the ball to kill the clock -- and kick a field goal on third down -- or if they're going to try to get the field goal squad on and immediately try the field goal. They try to do both. As the clock winds down, the quarterback realized the time and they finally snap the ball and spike it with about 18 men on the field (none set) -- the clock shows 0:00 after the spike. Plus there is the matter of the penalty.

The umpire announces the game is over. Maybe 10-15 seconds later the umpire then announces the final play is being reviewed. It is determined there is one second left. UNC is penalized five yard for illegal participation -- the prescribed penalty is fifteen yards. They line up and successfully kick a tying 39 yard field goal -- the attempt should have been from 49 yards had the penalty been applied correctly. A Tennessee played is flagged for running into the kicker -- questionable at best. The game goes into overtime. UNC goes on offense first in overtime at the 12.5 yard line due to the roughing penalty. They each score TDs in the first overtime and UNC wins in the second overtime.

What a circle jerk.

Two other things come to the mind. In the NFL the game would have been over without question. In the last two minutes of an NFL game, an offensive penalty which stops the clock is enforced plus ten seconds are run from the clock. This prevents purposeful penalties just to stop the clock when no other means is available. Obviously, with only one second remaining and an offensive foul, the game would've been over. Seems logical the NCAA should do the same.

Secondly, it always strikes me as a bit unfair that the referees 'assist' a team hurrying at the end of a game by doing their jobs in placing the ball, etc. in a hurry as well. It seems they should do their jobs at the same speed throughout the game. If a sweep is run and the tackle is made near the sideline, the referee should not run the ball back to the hash marks at the end of the game if he didn't run the ball back to the hash marks during the remainder of the game.
