"Two other things come to the mind. In the NFL the game would have been over without question. In the last two minutes of an NFL game, an offensive penalty which stops the clock is enforced plus ten seconds are run from the clock. This prevents purposeful penalties just to stop the clock when no other means is available. Obviously, with only one second remaining and an offensive foul, the game would've been over. Seems logical the NCAA should do the same."
I agree that the NFL has a much better rule here and the 10-second runoff would have ended the game. However, UNC did NOT stop the clock by intentionally incurring a penalty. They stopped the clock by properly spiking the ball with 1/2 second left, albeit with 16-17 players on the field, as the replay revealed.
I'm glad UNC eventually won the game as Tennessee committed at least a half a dozen cheap shots, illegal and late hits (some penalized, some not) and objectionable hand gestures (cut the throat and Nazi salute) in the last minutes of this game.
It was a wild finish, nonetheless.
