It is possible for an outstanding player to have a few truly profitable years. But, I maintain that no player makes significant money every year to be considered a pro. My position is that a professional backgammon player is not possible. Online action is too limited. Limited tourney winnings, travel/lodging costs, and inconsistency in cashing even if you play perfectly prevents Tournaments from creating professional players. Nevertheless, tournaments are excellent opportunities to earn points, play the best, and meet backgammon colleagues. Furthermore to be considered a venue to create professional players, backgammon must have the ability to generate at least $50,000 per year for at least 20 to 50 players. If not, it really is not a professional venue.
Stick, Neil, John, and many others do not play this game for the money.
