Why use clocks?

In Response To: Why use clocks? (Stanley E. Richards)

Does the problem still persist in major US tournaments? The latest reports on this site from tournaments seems to be only positive, and I assume that all of them have been at least clock-by-request. Are there still ABT tournaments where a player can not demand to play with a clock?
