Why use clocks? The other side of the argument

Henrik "I agreed completely with Stick in this thread but I think people are missing the first and foremost reason why so many players oppose clocks: They want backgammon to be different from chess, they hate chess and bridge and the typical players of these games, and want backgammon to be like in the good old days = "Not chess". It should be noisy players taunting each other, in smokey rooms, with money on the side, not the steril form of backgammon that they consider some modern tournaments to be."
This is a valid observation, I'd say. As for me, I was a tourney chess player before I was a tourney BG player so clocks were natural. As for bridge, there aren't clocks but players certainly aren't taunting each other. I do play bridge, but decided against trying high level play for now, since it is SO SLOW at the W/C level. I expect to play more bridge once I retire from working in a few years, but for now, it is too difficult for me to play W/C BG and attempt to learn W/C bridge.
