Bill Calton sent me an excellent article about learning Chess some time ago. It applies to Backgammon as well. Perhaps Bill could supply a link if he has it and knows which article I mean - he has sent me many. It talks about learning new things and ridding oneself of misconceptions as two legs of improving one's game. What I gleaned from the article is that there are many ways to learn new things, as Stanley suggests. It can be done with or without a sensei. However, ridding oneself of misconceptions is much harder to do by oneself. Lessons can be great for this critical part of advancement.
