Neil, I played some tourney chess myself as a child, stopped at the age of around 16-17 years old, with an ELO of just over 1800. I played more and more speed chess, and a lot of the variant where you play sides, handing beaten pieces to your team mates with opposite color from yourself - I don't know the correct English name for that variant, it's super fun, much action, and fast paced, we even played 3 or 4 tables. Anyway, my point is, that I was used to carry a chessclock in my school bag - and the clock was used for several different games, including backgammon, before I ever saw it used in a tourney.

I don't personally share the point I put across, but I often observe it from others. And that point is very "intangible" in a way that people don't like putting it forward on a discussion forum. It's not very scientific, measureable or proof-able. And many people don't want to express an opinion that somewhat translate to "I don't like chess people, I certainly would not like backgammon to become such a nerdy professor university game" - not publicly anyway.

I think that a lot of players get the feeling for clock play being sterile/chess-like the first couple of games they play. Simply because you spend a good amount thinking about the clock, the mechanical procedure, how much time spend/left, etc. And you don't relax for the first games until you really get the feel for how much time 2/12 or whatever really is.

It takes only 1-2 games to get used to the clocks, but it may take 5-10 games to get so much used to it, so everything else around you gets back to normal - chatting, noticing things around you not related to your game, etc.
