Ok,if take 4 error rate as the World class definition, its defeanetely possible to make it in other sport. I think its really feasible that you could reach 2200 in chess espcially since you have already work essential qualities in other games like backgammon and proven that you could indeed play at a very strong level. It may take you 5 years or more of hard study, play, coaching etc. 2200 is only master level so I woudnt consider it World class, maybe its around 4 error rate so according to Extreme it is:)
My definition of a world class chess player would be around 2600+ FIDE ( international rating)
The thing is there is some paradox in comparing different quantity. I make less mistakes in backgammon then in chess so one could argue that I am a better backgammon player:) Its just the nature of the game of chess is so depth that mistakes or innacuracy come at a much faster rate.
When I say backgammon is an easier game is the fact that I can feel it could be possible to play near perfect with ton of study and practice, I see the limitation of the game, wherea in chess I just cant dream of it.
Backgammon is almost 100% positional with little tactics, thats why its possible to play at a strong level without to much thinking, base on feel, experience and patern recognisation.
My intention is not do downgrade backgammon I think its a fantastic game and the real mastery lie in the very very small details once you get the general concepts out of the way.
Maybe what I am trying to say, its seem easier to make progress in backgammon up to a certain point compare to other things. You read a book or 2 and youve already improve a lot, you analyse with Snowie you get better overnight. Time you put into backgammon has an incredible amount of return compare to other activities.
If you pick up a guitar, piano or chess you may likely have not progress much even after 6 months. I know chess players who have red hundreds of books and still sucks.
But at the top of the backgammon ladder perhaps improvment to one own game get much more similar in difficulty then improvements in other top sport competition.
