I am not sure I agree. A lot of the preparation for training goes into finding ways to best get the materials across. For example, when I give training on CDM and carbon markets(my professional field), I may spend, per day of training to be provided, half an hour of basic research (checking latest developments, exact texts of the rules, etc.), about 1 hour of preparing/adapting powerpoints, and about 7 hours analyzing skill levels of participants, figuring out their main interests, and finding the best way to present the materials for the particular group to be trained.

In international checkers (draughts), I have given group trainings and personal trainings. I spent a lot of time on figuring out what to present and how, which means going through games played by the participant(s), classifying the mistakes, thinking about the missing concepts and/or wrong thinking patterns they might have. Nothing of this benefited my own game. Then thinking of good examples to illustrate concepts - this part may help my game a little bit.

The personal training I gave in exchange for well-cooked dinners, the group trainings I gave for the national selection of an up and coming country. The group trainings were paid, but if you calculate per hour revenues, it is clear that for about 85-90% it was done for love of the game.

Of course, if someone asks my opinion about a position or an opening, I'll give it for free. But a proper training, I would feel OK charging for.
