Is 2ply RO any good?

Isn't an eval basically a truncated 1-ply rollout?
Definitely not.
A 1-ply rollout truncated at N-moves is "let's make N consecutive donkey plays and then look at the equity of the position we've reached". Repeat and average.
Recursively speaking, a position's n-ply eval is the weighted average equity of the best plays for each possible dice roll, where each candidate play is evaluated at (n-1)-ply.
The difference is that the n-ply eval literally examines and evaluates (1-ply) every final possible position that can legally arise after all possible combinations of n rolls of the dice and then averages and back-propagates the equities to determine the best play at each non-final node in the tree.
