Generally there are two kinds of doubles teams: one where the players are about equal, and one where one is far better than the other. In the second case, a competition between the two would be very unfair.

In the first case, it would not be unique for the two players to compete and after being a team, competing against each other is almost anti-climitical.

There is something I love to do, however, when playing doubles with a player who is close to my skill level. I love to "bid" for the play.

If we disagree on a play, I will say that we will make my play, and if his play is better, I will pay him $10-$5 on a bet, and we take a picture and run it later.

He has the option of saying we must make his play, but he will pay me $15 to $5, and I can then go $20 to $5 and so on until someone gives up.

With this method we have a solution to resolve differences and we are probably more likely to make the better play because the one with the stronger feeling and commitment dictates which play is made.

In this manner, we do accomplish some of what you are trying to do...we get to play doubles but also have a side competition with each other...and it's fun, and it sharpens our game as we run these positions and get a much better understanding of these plays and of our own confidence or lack there of when we are unsure.
