My guess is that the bot is much better at bearing in/off with contact than without contact. I'd think that XG 5-ply or even XG 4-ply would be able to "see" any upcoming problems pretty well since the main issue seems to be leaving a direct shot during the next couple of rolls.

Without contact, the bot has less "selection pressure" to play correctly since wastage is something that won't manifest itself until a long way past the horizon.
