I don't think killing 4's was part of any consideration. The issue is NOT closing the ace point. The thought was that if your backgame hit materializes late in the bearoff you will need to pick up a second checker to win. Closing the ace point virtually precludes that.

I played as Captain in a chouette a couple of years ago with one of the current top 64 Giants on the team. In a somewhat similar position I covered the ace with an otherwise dead dilly builder and was nearly slapped out of my chair. Said Giant loudly shrieking - "you can't win a backgame if the ace point is made."
