So I guess what's getting me down is the righteous indignity of those who break the little rules....

I know what you mean. Maybe they think (incorrectly) that you are accusing them of intentionally cheating. Given the competitive environment, maybe they are reflexively "keeping their game face on". If there are kibitzers it can be worse, because there is some perceived 'honor' to defend. In general, I just think it's an overactive ego. But (unless the person calling attention to the impropriety is being an overtly rude jerk) it's simply indefensible.

I've said it so many times, but it's worth repeating. Players look up to the top players. If the top players are good sports, follow the rules, congratulate those who defeat them, refrain from whining or huffing and puffing or even rolling their eyes when luck goes against them, most everyone will follow. Fortunately for tournament BG, for the most part the top players set a very good example. I agree with you that if we all (Giants to Lilliputians) make it a habit not only to follow the rules (strictly) ourselves, but to 'encourage' all of our opponents to do the same, a lot of these little (and not so little) rules violations will disappear. How could that be anything but positive for the game?
