One division only?

More winners (places paid out) is definitely better. In the Cribbage organization, they pay out 25% of the field. Those 25% then get seeded pairings for playoffs. In their 1,000+ player event in Reno each year, those 250 players are going to get paid some amount.
In backgammon, we have gotten so used to ~10% of the field getting paid ---and therefore bigger prizes, that I would expect a huge push-back if we were to pay down to 1/4 of the field. E.g. in a 60 player field we pay ~6-7 places now and for a $240 entry fee with 85% return, first place would be about $4,450 and a last place of $550;
whereas,if we were to pay 25% (12 players), then first place might only be $3,790 and a last place of $37. I, as a TD, like the idea of paying more places, but I suspect that it would create way too much negativity --and who wants $37 back, when they paid $240.
