While the reasoning may be quite different, big government types and free-market types should logically both be against intellectual property, patents, copyrights and the like.
From the market side, here is a key insight. What the patent-owner enjoys is the legal right to prevent you from doing things with your property! see here http://fee.org/articles/tgif/intellectual-property
Here is an interesting rant that the result of our copyright system is to keep great works (literature, music) of the past forever dormant and inaccessible.
