There's no question that innovation and great value to humanity can be created free from IP protection. Wikipedia is a great example. GNUBG is a great example.
However, it is my opinion that all of these "for the common good" creations come about because people can engage in their side-projects while having their paying day-jobs to support them with companies that have IP protection. Or some insanely rich person that made their fortune from a company that had IP protection is now willing to give back and fund it.
The idea that any pharmaceutical company would invest tens of millions of dollars in R&D to bring a new drug to market so that every independent lab in the world could then immediately crank out and sell their new discovery is just crazy.
