Its not crazy if we lived in a nice Utopian society where everything that is done is to promote the betterment of humanity. Unfortunately that is not the case. In my case, I live a comfortable life, and have no complaints. I wish I lived in a nice egalitarian society, I'd be happy.
As for the example given, it is why I think that Governments around the world should be investing huge amounts of money into R&D and finding cures (Trillions). The benefits of such R&D done for the whole of humanity would have long term benefits for everyone. Unfortunately this would rape the pharmaceutical companies, drive down their stock, cause higher unemployment, and take away their ability to suck citizens dry of their life savings to create shareholder value. Finding cures is not profitable long term and those companies know it.
In the US, one of the biggest reasons that the status quo will be maintained is that the lobbyists hold the power. Lobbyists don't care about the people, they care about the corporations that fund their deep pockets.
Capitalism is failing the little guy. A couple generations from now our children's children will pay for our short sightedness.
