I didn't think it mattered much how many weren't in the pot, but what do I know? There are 8 at the table, but for this hand there's only 1. I suppose with more at the table, your opponent needed to be stronger to play from 2nd position. Is that what you are thinking?

The way I see it, unless you flop a winning hand, you are likely to have to go to the turn or river to make your hand, and you will have to bet evens to do so.
