Yep, there was a predecessor to the Zone. The "Village" as it was named was run by a couple guys out of Cali (Electric Gravity was their company). Their site came online in the latter part of '94 and I played there in Mid '95. MS IGZ was born in mid '96.

Anyone who played on the Village will likely remember the gates that slowly opened as you got connected, and then you entered into a valley surrounded with mountains, a stream, and some houses. Each house had a different game (Checkers/Spades/Chess/Backgammon). The original game code that existed on the village for the aforementioned four games pretty much survived until 2006. Improvements were made of course, but the games really didn't change much.
