I can, but will not, show plays and cube decision errors made by Giants that are monstrous blunders. I am absolutely certain that given enough time to study these plays away from the table, every one of these giants would have found a much better play, and probably the best play.

It is soooooooo easy to criticize a play or player after the match. Live play simply is full of distractions, includes a fatigue factor, and includes all kinds of other things going on in your mind including changing plays to take advantage of opponents' faults, the use of the clock, and when can I take a break to get to the bathroom or dinner. Or the player might be distracted thinking about the horrible cube he just got from his opponent.

But even if you remove the excuses, the fact is that backgammon is a complex game, and even the best in the world are going to blow some plays.

I can fully understand why people are sensitive about having their blunders and bad matches publicized, because most people think these greats, like Neil, will always play at 2.5 or less. It's simply not realistic, and the more we see matches made public, the more we will see that the true test of a player's skill is his long-term PR and his W/L record. (Howard Ring used to tell me that the only thing that matters about the ER is the difference between you and your opponent, not the net number.)
