Maybe they don't know what type of calculations to do?!
I think it's worse than that. Before they can even attempt any calculation they must recognize the fact that a calculation is an option.
What we see in the NFL is really a reflection of much of society: they have brains which are capable of working some of these things out (beforehand). They have the arithmetic skills to do that. They (or someone on their staff) knows the mathematical principle of expectation.
Then they simply don't even try to take advantage of their knowledge/brainpower. Why? Maybe no one ever stressed such an approach, and in particular the football people who taught them the game sure didn't. But that might be letting them off too easily. Maybe at one time they KNEW how to do it, and just (for whatever reason) let that knowledge slip into the crevasse.
