I believe we all should cut Rob Maier some slack. He may be the most experimental (and open minded?) director in the ABT. He listens to peoples' concerns and, with his own intuition, etc., attempts to improve. At this point it appears that this year's experiment has a flaw or two. He will fix it in the future. Rob's a smart guy.

I should be clear -- I think this was a very well run tournament, and I agree... Rob is a smart guy. I talked to him about the issue with the byes, and he was way ahead of me. He'll fix that for next time. I offered to run some simulations on his tournament structure... maybe that can give him some insights to how to do things even better.

Pittsburgh is a GREAT tournament with a solid turnout, extremely capably run. I have no doubts that this will be a regular event for me now that I'm living on the east coast.
