I figure a "vigorous" shake is one where, if you weren't covering the opening of the cup with your fingers, the dice would fly out -- dice hitting the fingers, same idea there. And I figure the minimum "N" for such vigorous, necessarily up-and-down shakes, is 3. I've explained, and heard the rule explained, pretty much like that many times. I'd say everybody knows this, except that a few players roll like they don't know it. The rule could stand a rewrite, I think.
