Disclaimer: I know I run the risk of both giving you a solution you already considered, as well as giving you a solution you didn't ask for, but this is an open (more/less :) discussion site so even an answer which isn't appropriate for you may be useful to someone else.

Speaking from experience, I've found that installing Ubuntu Linux is as easy, and possibly easier than installing Windows-xyz. Then you get GNU compilers with the click of a download.

Dual boot (thus giving you both OS's, but can't be run simultaneously) is an option, but so are virtual machines (VM's), where you CAN run both OS's at the same time, e.g. if you are doing an XG rollout and want to keep it going. I've not done VM, however, so I can't say that part is easy.
