Playing would have been better.
During the period right after learning to bid I played in some home games. We had one very good player (besides my partner), a guy named Malcolm Sims who, teamed with Paul Marston, represented NZ in the 1980 Olympiad. But after a few games most of the players left town, so I sat at home studying.
I played one session at a club in Chicago over the Christmas holiday, with Gene Chait, but really started the night I walked in the Bridge Club in January of '84. It turned out to be a team event, and on the first hand my partner psyched 2C. One of the opponents and I, in unison, chimed: "You can't psych a 2 club opener!" My other opponent (who held 28 points) gave the most sharklike grin I have ever seen: "It's okay!" Through brilliant play ;-) I only went for 900 in 3NT. This should have been a triumph as they were cold for a grand in pretty much anything except 7C. But the other half of our team played 4H +510, so we lost imps.
