In Response To: BGO forum popularity? (Adam Versaw)

The young and quickly improving expert (best player in Pennsylvania) Adam V asks, "How many people subscribe to Chicago Point? How many people visit this site per (day/week/month)?"

It seems I recall that the well-dressed Mr. Bill Davis told me within the last few years that his paid subscriptions are less than half what they were at their peak, which may have occurred ten or fifteen years ago. Just a very rough guess, but maybe it is down from 700 to 300. There are more people who visit Stick's site on a daily basis than those who subscribe to the Chicago Point.

I strongly encourage everyone to subscribe to the Chicago Point, but let's see how Bill's Chicago Point newsletter compares to Stick's site in five categories.

(1) Stick's site is free while the Point costs $30 per year.

(2) You can read in the Point about results of tournaments that occurred weeks ago; you can get this info on Stick's site within hours or minutes of the completion of an event.

(3) In the ten-page March 2011 issue of the Point, there was analysis of only one position. It was an outstanding article by fifty-time ABT champ NeilKaz. By contrast, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of positions discussed on Stick's site every month.

(4) In the Chicago Point, you get only one point of view, the opinions of an anachronistic director who is totally out of touch with the pulse of the US backgammon community on issues like "Is Clock Overuse Hurting Backgammon?" and "Legal Moves." On Stick's site, you get to read a wide spectrums of opinions by Giants and non-Giants. You get to see what Stickgod has to say.

(5) Finally, in the Chicago Point, you no longer will be reading any material by Paul Weaver. For roughly a dozen years, I had been writing at least one article per year. Although Bill never told me he no longer wants me to write for him, I have figured out that he will not be publishing any more of my articles. Bill, evidently, was offended by some or all of my posts five to six months ago in which I stated that the way he ran his March 2010 tournament was totally unacceptable. By contrast, those who are interested in what I have to say (Stick deletes at least half my posts; he should probably delete a lot more than that to keep me out of trouble) can read what I have to say here on Stick's site.
