I didn't think your post was meant to be derogatory. (You don't make those kinds of posts.)

I'm using the recommended 3-ply play settings ("Grandmaster") that comes with the package. I don't know enough about gnuBG's workings to answer, but I do know that 3-ply rollouts take considerably longer than 2-ply rollouts, so hopefully that extra CO2 generated is doing more than just marginal improvement (whatever that means).

Pragmatically, we know from your study that gnuBG 3-ply play is better than 2-ply play. It also appears (true for XG as well?) that once you get past two levels of lookahead (gnuBG's 2-ply, XG's 3-ply), diminishing returns set in.

BTW, I'm now doing a Supremo rollout. I'll post that result later today or early tomorrow (US time).
