Chouette Protocols/Rules

I'm with Steve. Settlements can be made at any time - before the cube, after the cube, after the roll - unless local Chouette rules specify otherwise. I've seen Chouettes in which the box is required to either take all cubes or pass all cubes, and in those Chouettes, if the box wishes to stay in the game but limit risk he must first take all cubes before offering to settle with anyone on the team (usually offering the value of a drop). But lacking any such explicit rules, there is no reason why player H cannot discuss settlement after your cube has been given.

Say the opponent lifted his dice and nobody has doubled yet. At that point in time, does anyone on the team have the right to say "hold your roll" and then state to the box: "I'll take 3 points"? Of course they can, and the offer is valid without the box knowing whether or not they will double if he declines the offer. Maybe the player knows it is a double, but they'd rather try to settle than risk having their 8-cube taken. So if settlement discussion is ok here, why should the fact that you doubled take away that right?

I do understand your gripe however. The idea being that the box may not be sure whether to take or drop the cube and the box might drop incorrectly, paying 4 points if forced to make the decision. Meanwhile if some players offer to take 3 points, it passes information to the box suggesting that the game is worth less than 4 points. That is unfortunately tough luck for you given generally accepted Chouette custom.

I personally would favor instituting a rule for Chouette that limits settlement discussion to the time interval between completion of any cube decisions and rolling the dice.
