In Response To: related question about Magriel Backgammon book (LowRayTeeng)

I think Magriel's book is still good or very good, and his explanations are sound, and the concepts very useful. I think the analysis is biased a bit towards positional play. Not enough emphasis on blitz and/or race (I think in some cases he might have used number of checkers back as a shorthand for the race). On the opening front, some ideas are outdated (64 and 53 and 62 for example, with making the 2 rep 3 panned and the slot with 62 seen as viable).

I also believe that the book does not say that much about the cube, and that some cube recommendations were off / too conservative (don't have my copy at hand so cannot check).

It will probably be an excellent idea to work through the book and check the recommendations with the computer. Again, the concepts are very well explained, and are very good ways to organize thinking about positions, even in some cases the waitings are off.

My guess is that the book, written in a pre-bot era, is still remarkably good overall.
