thanks for the link !! i did internet search for "magriel backgammon" but didn't think to search for "magriel errors"

yes i've read that reply about the concepts & explanations ALOT and i guess it's ok but now i've gotten to the point where i've learned enough and don't trust authors (heh :) when they say "this is the correct answer" because i've read so many analysis paragraphs even i can now spout analysis to support practically any reasonable move with any dice roll, and the concepts are starting to conflict themselves or i'm not quite yet able to discern when to apply which concept etc

so i figured out how to setup positions in gnubg and clik the hint button to look at the analysis results myself and starting to check a few answers, which leads to my next post about whether 1 move is really superior to the next move if the analysis numbers for 3-ply are less than some small amount different...
