A little rules question...and socialiability in a local BG club

A number of newbie live players (and some quite experienced ones) have asked me if they can roll on the other side of the board. The problem is that this leaves both of us open to a cheap shot. If my opponent rolls a 66 on the wrong side of the board I can call over the director and he/she will have to rule that the roll does not stand. Alternatively my opponent can roll an anti-joker on the wrong side and call the Director over and 'properly' claim that it is not a legal roll and that they can throw again.
You ask what is more respectful at a little backgammon club/event. At a friendly local tournament I would explain the above and then go on to say that as I trust both of us to behave as ethical, sociable human beings then I have no problem with them rolling on the other side of the board.
At a big money, serious tournament I would explain the above reasoning and suggest that, maybe it was best to eliminate all possible misunderstanding and play by the letter of the law.
